[00:00:10] Hello, Sleep Wave, and welcome to your bed. You've made it through the day, and now you get to just push the pause button, let everything go, and take this time just for you. I'm your host, Carissa, and I am so happy to have you here with us tonight. We have a really beautiful meditation to drift off to tonight, and it's all about the power of memory.
[00:00:35] This is our weekly free episode. If you've been enjoying the show, I'm inviting you to become a subscriber. With two bonus episodes a month and totally ad-free listening, it's really the best way to enjoy the show so that you get restful sleep night after night. Memory can be such a powerful thing, right? It can be something that we love to revisit, or sometimes it can be the very thing that keeps us stuck in the same old patterns.
[00:01:02] An important thing that meditation teaches us is presence. When you are present, even when lost in a memory, you can ground yourself in the here and now. You can then more easily absorb the joy the memory might give, or grant space and perspective to those less than happy memories.
[00:01:23] Embracing the superpower of presence can bring more ease and connection into each day so that you rest better at night. Before we begin, our only ad break, which helps make this show possible. To listen ad-free, follow the link in the show notes. If your family enjoys the stories here on Sleep Wave, and you're looking for something to listen to during the day, I think you'll love this.
[00:01:50] It's a podcast called The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian. It's a serialized science fiction story about an 8-year-old and his friends exploring space and solving mysteries, told in 15- to 20-minute episodes that are perfect for car rides or for winding down at the end of the day. The podcast is recorded by Jonathan Messenger and his son Griffin in the basement of their home and has a similar warm narrator feel that we have here on Sleepwave.
[00:02:20] It's built a whole host of loyal fans and even a shout-out from Time Out magazine who pointed out how much fun kids have following the cruise adventures, exploring new planets, meeting aliens, and helping shape what happens next. It's one of those stories kids can get completely drawn into, and one I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to with them.
[00:02:43] So, if you're looking for a story podcast to share with your family, look for The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian on Apple Podcasts or head to gzmshows.com for more info. And be sure to tell them Sleepwave sent you. Alright friends, let's settle in and enjoy this powerful and peaceful meditation Billie T has written for us.
[00:03:15] Listen to the sounds in the room where you are resting. Notice any sounds that seem a bit farther away and the sounds that seem a little closer. See if you can notice the space between these sounds. You might begin to listen even more closely, perhaps to the gentle sound of your own breath. Just notice now.
[00:03:49] Now notice how you feel. As your attention settles into listening, the mind can begin to quiet on its own. There's nothing you need to do to make that happen. Just notice.
[00:04:18] Notice yourself noticing. Your breath flows in and out in a gentle, natural way. Perhaps your exhale lingers just a little longer than your inhale.
[00:04:42] Notice the pauses between your breaths and the subtle movement of your belly and chest. There is no pressure to perform here. Just simple breathing. Simply noticing.
[00:05:10] Your body may offer small cues about how it would like to relax. A slight shift. A deeper inhale. A soft sigh. You can allow those signals to respond if it feels natural. Or simply rest as you are.
[00:05:37] Again, listening to distant sounds. Nearer sounds. Nearer sounds. Inner sounds. Even the quiet between them. You might begin to notice what it felt like just a moment ago.
[00:06:04] When your attention was fully here. Listening. Present. There is no need to hold on to it. Or recreate it. Just a soft recognition. You were there. And now, you are here.
[00:06:32] And even as moments change, something simple remains. Memory can bring the past close again, like roses in December. A feeling or a moment returning can be a truly beautiful thing.
[00:07:05] Memory reminds us of who we are, but not always in the way we expect. Moments from our lives. Places we've been. And people we've known. That seem to stay with us. But what remains is not the moment itself.
[00:07:35] It's a pattern of feeling. Of images. Of impressions that can return. The most vivid part of those experiences has already passed. The moments themselves move on like water blowing gently downstream.
[00:08:01] And yet, when a memory arises, it can feel close again. Alive in a different way. In that moment, something interesting begins to happen. It is not only that we are remembering the past.
[00:08:28] There is also a sense of being here. Now. Noticing it. And perhaps, in a very subtle way, the memory is not pulling us away from the present, but gently pointing us back to it. Because what is alive in the memory is also here now.
[00:08:57] Just breathe gently, at your own pace, for a few moments.
[00:10:18] As you continue to rest here, you may begin to notice how naturally the mind moves. Without effort. Without intention. It can drift from the rhythm of your breath into a thought, followed by a feeling. And then, perhaps, a memory begins to take shape.
[00:10:51] It can be something small, something ordinary, or something more vivid. A moment. A place. A face. A moment in time that seems to return almost on its own. There is something gentle about this process.
[00:11:18] The way the mind revisits what has already been lived. The way a memory can feel close again. Not as something distant, but present. Here. Now. You might notice how a memory carries a certain texture with it. A tone.
[00:11:45] A feeling that lingers beneath the surface. It is not the full moment as it once was, but something of it remains. something recognizable. Something that can still be felt as happens.
[00:12:15] You might begin to notice how easy it is to follow it. To step into it. Just slightly. And allow it to unfold. The mind fills in small details. Colors in the edges. And for a moment,
[00:12:43] it can feel as though you are there again. Not completely. But enough that the feeling becomes real. This is simply how the mind works. It gathers what has been experienced and gently brings it forward again.
[00:13:09] There is no need to stop this. And no need to hold on to it either. You can allow these memories to come and go. Just as naturally as the breath moves in and out.
[00:13:37] You might notice one appearing, then fading. Each one carrying its own tone. Its own quiet impression. All the while remains.
[00:14:06] Even as a memory forms. Even as it shifts and changes. You are still here. You are still here. Resting. The memory moves. But this simple awareness does not.
[00:14:35] It is present before the memory appears. And it remains as the memory fades. You might begin to sense this gently. Without needing to think about it. The difference between what is moving
[00:15:03] and what is simply here. The memory has its own rhythm. Its own movement. While your awareness stays steady. And at ease.
[00:15:33] So, for now. Just allow the mind to move as it does. Let memories come if they come. And let them pass if they pass. There is nothing you need to do with them. Just resting here. Noticing.
[00:16:03] As the mind gently reveals what it has been holding. While you remain quietly present. Throughout.
[00:17:17] And sometimes, even within these memories. You might notice a soft movement towards something else. A sense of wanting things to be different. Or imagining a future that feels lighter. Clearer. More.
[00:17:44] The mind can begin to reach forward. Just as easily. As it looks back. Shaping new possibilities. New experiences. New versions. Of what life could be. There is something natural in that.
[00:18:14] Too.
[00:19:18] Even as the mind moves in this way. Remembering what has been. Or imagining what could be. You might begin to notice. That something here remains unchanged. A sense of just being here. Here. The simple experience.
[00:19:48] Of noticing. It doesn't need to become anything different. And it's not shaped by the memory. Or the thought. It's present even before a memory forms. It's still here. And still here. As it fades.
[00:20:15] You may not have noticed it before. Because it is so simple. So near. But it has been there. In every moment. Gently aware. Without needing to hold on to anything at all. It's here now. Listening.
[00:21:48] And as these memories move through. You might begin to notice. How easy it is. To stay with them. A thought. Leads to another. A feeling. Begins to deepen. And before long. The mind can settle. Into a familiar pattern. This is something we all do.
[00:22:18] The mind returns to what it knows. What it has felt before. What has left an impression. There is a kind of comfort in that. Even when the memory itself. Isn't especially pleasant. But as this begins to happen. You might also notice. That there is no need.
[00:22:47] To go further than you want to. The memory can be there. And at the same time. You. Can remain here. Breathing. Resting. There is space. For both.
[00:23:18] You don't need to push the memory away. And you don't need to follow it. Let it move as it moves. While your attention gently settles back. Into what is here now.
[00:23:47] The rhythm of your breath. The presence within. In this way. The mind can begin to soften. By force. Not by effort.
[00:24:13] But simply by not being carried off so far. The patterns may still appear. But they begin to feel a little lighter. As though they can come and go easily.
[00:24:36] There is such ease in this. A sense that you don't have to stay inside every thought. Or every memory. Or every feeling that arises. You can let them pass. Just as the breath rises.
[00:25:07] And falls. Let them play before your awareness for a while. As you rest here. Listening. Here. Now. The mind can settle. In its own time. Breathing in.
[00:25:44] For a few moments.
[00:26:47] There is nothing more you need to follow. The mind can begin to rest. In its own natural way. Memories may still come and go. Just as they do. But there is no need to reach for them. And no need to turn away from them. They can move quietly.
[00:27:19] You remain here. Resting. Listening. The sounds in the room may begin to feel more distant. Less defined. And even the sound of your own breath may settle.
[00:27:48] Into a slower chance. The body sinking a little deeper into the surface beneath you. Corded. Held. But with no effort required.
[00:28:17] You might begin to notice the muscles of the face softening. The space around the eyes and the jaw gently releasing. The neck and shoulders can follow. Letting go of any holding. The arms grow heavier.
[00:28:45] The hands feel empty and receptive. The chest and belly soften with the breath. The hips and legs begin to settle. All the way down through the knees. The calves end into the feet. Resting fully.
[00:29:14] There is nothing you need.
[00:30:25] Nothing you need to hold on. Nothing you need. Just this simple sense of being here. Without needing to name it. Or understand it.
[00:30:53] And even this can begin to dissolve. Thoughts may grow lighter. Less frequent. As the spaces between them expand. The mind no longer needing to organize or revisit. Or make sense of anything at all. Just resting. Breathing.
[00:31:23] Allowing everything to settle as it is. If a memory appears. It can pass like a distant echo. Beating on its own. If a thought arises. It can dissolve just as gently. Like a sound disappearing into silence.
[00:31:50] If images appear. Imagine that they can dissolve again just as easily. Like watercolors on a canvas. There is no need to fall. No need to hold anything.
[00:32:22] Everything you need is already here. And even that sense can begin to soften now. The breath continues slow. The body at ease. The mind unwinding without direction.
[00:32:48] And as you remain here. You may begin to feel the edges of wakefulness blur softly. Thoughts become softer. Drifting. Dissolving before they fully form. Awareness itself becoming lighter. More spacious.
[00:33:18] As though it too can rest. To arrive in its own. Without effort. There is nothing left to do. Nothing left to figure out.
[00:33:53] Stressing in this quiet. Sleep.
