Tonight’s Wednesday Wisdom with Karissa reflects on the importance of slowing down - and making space to simply be still.
Through a personal story she reminds us that rest often requires intention, especially during life’s transitions. Learning to pause, even briefly, can help settle the nervous system and make space for clarity and deeper rest.

[00:00:27] There's a song by the band The Head and the Heart and the refrain goes, Just for a moment, let's be still. It's such a simple lyric, but every single time I hear it, I somehow exhale deeper and my shoulders drop a bit. Life demands so much movement. There is so much to do in a day and endless distractions. Nighttime is when we usually slow down, but even that is easier said than done.
[00:00:57] Right? I have had a string of nights recently when I feel like I am just running until it's time for my head to hit the pillow. But of course, that means my nervous system is humming along and will not let me sleep peacefully. On one of these nights of tossing and turning, I did what I almost never do. I got out of bed. I knew I completely skipped any kind of wind down routine for too many days. And if I wanted to sleep at all, I needed to be a little bit more.
[00:01:27] I had to be intentional about it. So, I got up, went into the living room, lit a fire in the fireplace, got myself a warm cup of tea and a cozy blanket, and did a 30-minute meditation. When I opened my eyes at the end of the meditation, finished my tea and turned off the fire, I went back to my bed and had a really lovely, solid night of sleep. Giving ourselves these transitions is so important. It can also extend
[00:01:57] beyond our nighttime routines. There are times in life when it behooves us to be still. Transitions when you're simply not sure what the next right step may be. Sometimes after a big life event, like a birth, death, breakup, graduation, or other life event that calls us to just be for a moment until the next chapter begins. Meditation gives us practice doing this, so when life asks this of us, it is slightly less uncomfortable.
[00:02:34] If your family enjoys the stories here on Sleep Wave, and you're looking for something to listen to during the day, I think you'll love this. It's a podcast called The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian. It's a serialized science fiction story about an 8-year-old and his friends exploring space and solving mysteries, told in 15- to 20-minute episodes that are perfect for car rides or for winding down at the end of the day.
[00:03:01] The podcast is recorded by Jonathan Messinger and his son Griffin in the basement of their home and has a similar warm narrator feel that we have here on Sleepwave. It's built a whole host of loyal fans and even a shout-out from Time Out magazine who pointed out how much fun kids have following the cruise adventures, exploring new planets, meeting aliens, and helping shape what happens next.
[00:03:27] It's one of those stories kids can get completely drawn into, and one I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to with them. So, if you're looking for a story podcast to share with your family, look for The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian on Apple Podcasts or head to gzmshows.com for more info. And be sure to tell them Sleepwave sent you.
