[00:02:20] The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little word extra.

[00:02:29] On the Growth Mindset Podcast, I dive into the psychology of human potential and what the science says about self-improvement to give you that little extra.

[00:02:39] According to experts, your potential is not sitting under a rock waiting for you to finally trip over it.

[00:02:47] Destiny is merely a function of dedication and hard work.

[00:02:51] So leave your inner chakra at the door, put the astrology chart down, and stop waiting for something or someone to fix your life.

[00:02:59] Take responsibility for yourself and give me a listen on the Growth Mindset Psychology of Self-Improvement Podcast.

[00:03:15] Maybe you've been finding life a little chaotic recently.

[00:03:19] Maybe you felt stress at work or found the rush of the holidays didn't leave you as relaxed and restored as you hoped it would.

[00:03:28] Tonight, let's take some time to relax and take any worries off our shoulders with a trip down to the quaint Cornish fishing village of Port Isaac

[00:03:38] to enjoy a little respite on the beach.

[00:03:41] The journey here was long and winding, but without interruption.

[00:03:57] Wide motorways rolled into B-roads, which, after hours on the road,

[00:04:03] ambled into the cobbled country lanes and dirt tracks that zigzagged across the crest of the hillsides.

[00:04:10] Your little car rumbling over the cobbles and between tall hedges,

[00:04:15] you made your way down the hillsides that alcove off this little fishing village at their foot.

[00:04:23] Now, parked up just beyond the village, you take your towel and a book from the backseat.

[00:04:32] You resolve to leave your phone behind, and with it the bustle and bother of daily life.

[00:04:40] Locked away in the glove compartment, the never-ending to-dos and incessant notifications,

[00:04:48] the emails from colleagues that don't seem to value their sleep or respect your boundaries,

[00:04:55] can no longer disturb you.

[00:04:57] With your towel tucked beneath your arm and book in hand,

[00:05:02] you meander down to the beach.

[00:05:07] Drifting down the narrow lanes,

[00:05:10] you listen to the rolling of the ocean grow louder with every step you take.

[00:05:21] Keeping a pace with the sound,

[00:05:24] the rhythmic wash of the tide as it advances and retreats upon the beach,

[00:05:32] you pass tea cafes and pastry shops.

[00:05:37] You wander past the stick-of-rock sweet shop and the chip shop at the end of the lane,

[00:05:43] without so much as a glance through the window.

[00:05:49] It's late afternoon, in your own personal paradise,

[00:05:53] and there's only one thing on your mind.

[00:05:59] Eventually, the cobbles give way to golden sands,

[00:06:03] and the ocean stretches out ahead of you.

[00:06:08] There's nothing and no one that can disturb you here,

[00:06:13] upon the soft sands of the beach.

[00:06:19] Not 600 meters beyond the shore,

[00:06:23] two large harbor walls stretch out into the ocean

[00:06:28] and help to calm the waters in the cove,

[00:06:34] protecting the fishing boats docked within the harbor walls from the elements.

[00:06:42] Down on the beach,

[00:06:44] the warmth of the summer sun relaxes the muscles in your shoulders and back,

[00:06:52] as it beats down upon sun-soaked golden sands.

[00:07:01] You take a deep breath in,

[00:07:05] enjoying the fresh air that an escape from the city allows for,

[00:07:11] and grant yourself a moment to absorb the striking natural beauty of the Cornish coast.

[00:07:20] Exhaling,

[00:07:22] you realize that the quiet, quaint beauty of this little village

[00:07:28] is offset by the wild, unkempt beauty of the cliff edge against crashing waves,

[00:07:36] and can't help but think that this sleepy little town presents its own kind of chaos.

[00:07:45] The birds seem busy on the shoreline,

[00:07:49] scavenging for chips, squawking into the wind.

[00:07:55] The ocean churns before you,

[00:07:59] and the little fishing boats you'd pictured bobbing gently upon the surface of the water

[00:08:06] seem to be rushing to and from the port.

[00:08:13] Perhaps with the waters churning as they are,

[00:08:18] the fish have ventured closer to land than they otherwise might have.

[00:08:25] Such conditions could only spell a busy day for the trawler men,

[00:08:32] whose voices can just be heard over the wind.

[00:08:35] It's a sunny day,

[00:08:38] and it might even be warm if that incessant wind would stop its blustering

[00:08:45] and let the sand upon the beach alone.

[00:08:51] Though, no doubt, Port Isaac is its own kind of beautiful,

[00:08:56] with the seas churning and the wind rushing across the beach.

[00:09:04] A picture-perfect day at the seaside, this is not.

[00:09:10] Nevertheless,

[00:09:12] you push down the beach with a towel tucked beneath your arm

[00:09:17] and sunglasses perched atop of your head.

[00:09:23] It's not long before you're pushing those same sunglasses

[00:09:28] as far up the bridge of your nose as is possible,

[00:09:32] and hoping they'll function as goggles

[00:09:35] and shield your eyes from the sand swept up in the howling wind.

[00:09:43] Rolling out your towel

[00:09:45] and using heavy stones to weigh it down by the corners,

[00:09:50] you take the opportunity to stretch out on the beach.

[00:09:58] However busy life is at home,

[00:10:02] however chaotic the beach around you appears to be,

[00:10:07] this is your time for you.

[00:10:10] There is nothing and no one that will stop you from relaxing here,

[00:10:18] in this moment.

[00:10:22] Lying there,

[00:10:24] you take a moment to listen to your body.

[00:10:30] You tune out the crash of the waves against the harbor wall,

[00:10:36] the persistent whistle of the wind,

[00:10:39] and look within.

[00:10:42] How does your body feel against the soft sands beneath you?

[00:10:53] Or the sun against your skin?

[00:11:01] As you sink back into your body

[00:11:05] and use your surroundings to anchor you into the present moment,

[00:11:14] grant yourself the opportunity to simply be.

[00:11:21] Beneath the sun and upon the silken sand,

[00:11:27] there is nothing for you to do but breathe.

[00:11:33] There is no task more arduous for the undertaking

[00:11:38] than rest and relaxation.

[00:11:47] Starting from the very crown of your head,

[00:11:52] scan down your body,

[00:11:55] centering your attention on the warmth of the sunlight across your skin.

[00:12:06] Feel that gentle warmth sinking into the muscles that support your neck,

[00:12:17] down into your shoulders,

[00:12:22] and allowing them to sink deeper into the soft sand beneath.

[00:12:36] Feel your arms loosening and relaxing,

[00:12:41] your core softening and releasing,

[00:12:54] your legs lengthening

[00:12:57] as the warmth ebbs into your muscles

[00:13:02] and settles into your core,

[00:13:10] thawing you from the inside out.

[00:13:15] Take a deep breath in,

[00:13:17] feeling that warmth swell within you,

[00:13:26] and exhale,

[00:13:29] easing any stored up tension

[00:13:32] on a long, lazy breath.

[00:13:40] As you lie there breathing,

[00:13:43] you notice the warmth of the sun intensifying

[00:13:47] and your breath deepening.

[00:13:53] Try not to interfere with it.

[00:13:56] Simply lie there,

[00:13:59] soaking in the sunlight

[00:14:02] and listening to the gentle time

[00:17:14] as your breath grows deeper

[00:17:17] and deeper still.

[00:17:21] You realize that it's beginning to drown out

[00:17:26] the ocean beyond your body,

[00:17:31] breathing in deeply once more.

[00:17:35] You enjoy the perfect peace of this moment.

[00:17:44] Exhaling,

[00:17:45] you find you can no longer hear the seagulls

[00:17:50] scuttling along the shoreline.

[00:17:55] Inhaling again,

[00:17:57] the slot machines in the arcade

[00:18:00] at the back of the beach

[00:18:02] cease their cash clatter.

[00:18:06] And on your outbreath,

[00:18:08] the wind itself seems to halt.

[00:18:14] In the perfect silence of this moment,

[00:18:18] your skin glows beneath the warmth

[00:18:22] of the summer sun.

[00:18:24] And your mind finally starts to clear.

[00:18:32] Opening your eyes

[00:18:34] and peering out of heavy eyelids,

[00:18:38] it takes you a moment to realize

[00:18:41] that the world around you

[00:18:44] has ground to a complete halt.

[00:18:50] The bustling seaside town

[00:18:53] you meandered through

[00:18:54] but minutes ago

[00:18:56] appears to you now

[00:18:58] suspended and drenched

[00:19:03] in a stillness

[00:19:04] not dissimilar

[00:19:06] to the sacred inner pause

[00:19:08] that your body grants you.

[00:19:11] Between a deep breath in

[00:19:13] and a long sigh out,

[00:19:16] the fishing boats

[00:19:19] are poised mid-bob

[00:19:21] upon the surface of the water.

[00:19:26] The sun has stopped still

[00:19:29] in the sky above you

[00:19:32] and all progress

[00:19:34] on its journey towards the horizon

[00:19:38] appears to have ceased.

[00:19:42] This is exactly

[00:19:43] the kind of calm

[00:19:45] and quiet

[00:19:46] you have been craving.

[00:19:52] With your breath alone,

[00:19:54] you have halted the tide

[00:19:56] and given pause

[00:19:58] to the rising moon.

[00:20:02] You have cleared

[00:20:03] the summer crowds

[00:20:05] and silenced

[00:20:07] the rumbling car engines

[00:20:09] in the village

[00:20:11] at your back.

[00:20:14] This moment,

[00:20:15] etched into time

[00:20:17] just for you,

[00:20:20] grants you a moment

[00:20:21] to reflect

[00:20:25] as you lie there

[00:20:27] breathing,

[00:20:30] drawing in

[00:20:31] all of the peace

[00:20:34] and tranquility

[00:20:36] this moment offers you.

[00:20:39] Let the heat

[00:20:40] of the golden sunlight

[00:20:43] and the warmth

[00:20:45] of the sand beneath you

[00:20:49] sink into you.

[00:21:54] You reflect

[00:21:55] on the power

[00:21:56] of your breath,

[00:21:59] on the way it shapes

[00:22:00] the world around you.

[00:22:04] From the short,

[00:22:05] sharp breaths

[00:22:06] that leave you feeling

[00:22:08] flustered and rushed

[00:22:10] to the deep,

[00:22:12] relaxing ones

[00:22:14] that give pause

[00:22:16] to the tempest within.

[00:22:20] Consider the long,

[00:22:22] blaze breaths

[00:22:24] that make morning strolls

[00:22:26] feel luxurious

[00:22:27] and the world around you

[00:22:30] just a little bit brighter.

[00:22:35] Know that the beach

[00:22:37] beyond your body

[00:22:38] is but a reflection

[00:22:40] of your inner stillness,

[00:22:43] of the lulling quiet

[00:22:45] that washes over you

[00:22:47] between a deep breath in

[00:22:52] and a long sigh.

[00:22:56] Take a moment

[00:22:58] to enjoy that stillness.

[00:23:02] Breathing in,

[00:23:05] holding for a moment,

[00:23:08] savoring the stillness

[00:23:10] of the great inner pause

[00:23:12] before exhaling

[00:23:14] and letting go

[00:23:17] of any negative energy

[00:23:19] that no longer serves you.

[00:23:22] Inhaling once more,

[00:23:25] pausing to relish

[00:23:27] the silence within

[00:23:30] and releasing

[00:23:34] any thoughts

[00:23:36] or feelings

[00:23:37] that interfere

[00:23:38] with your inner peace.

[00:23:46] Now,

[00:23:47] take a moment

[00:23:48] to look within

[00:23:49] and acknowledge

[00:23:52] how you're feeling

[00:23:53] in this very moment.

[00:23:59] The silence of the beach

[00:24:01] is a safe haven

[00:24:02] and offers you

[00:24:04] the space and time

[00:24:06] you need

[00:24:07] to be brave

[00:24:08] and grant yourself

[00:24:10] the honesty

[00:24:12] you deserve.

[00:24:16] Without the chaos

[00:24:17] of the outside world

[00:24:19] to sway your judgment,

[00:24:22] ask yourself,

[00:24:23] how are you feeling?

[00:24:26] There's no right

[00:24:27] or wrong,

[00:24:29] nothing

[00:24:30] and no one

[00:24:32] to pass comment

[00:24:33] or tell you

[00:24:35] to feel otherwise.

[00:24:39] Swaddled in the silence

[00:24:41] of this safe space,

[00:24:45] you know

[00:24:45] that this is your time

[00:24:48] to think,

[00:24:50] to feel,

[00:24:52] to reflect.

[00:26:59] As you exhale,

[00:27:02] like all the faces

[00:27:05] and places

[00:27:06] that led you

[00:27:08] to this moment,

[00:27:10] there is nothing before

[00:27:12] and nothing to come

[00:27:14] that matters more

[00:27:17] than you

[00:27:17] and how you're feeling

[00:27:20] at this precise

[00:27:21] moment in time.

[00:27:26] Know

[00:27:26] that whenever

[00:27:28] you feel

[00:27:28] the chaos

[00:27:29] of the world

[00:27:31] beyond your body

[00:27:32] beginning to crowd

[00:27:34] your mind,

[00:27:36] this serenity,

[00:27:38] this moment

[00:27:39] on the beach,

[00:27:40] is but a breath away.

[00:27:46] You take another

[00:27:47] deep breath in,

[00:27:49] feeling the fresh air

[00:27:52] fill your lungs

[00:27:53] and as you exhale,

[00:27:57] you notice

[00:27:58] that the tide

[00:27:59] is gradually

[00:28:00] beginning to push out again.

[00:28:05] With each cycle

[00:28:06] of your breath,

[00:28:08] the sun

[00:28:09] seems to sink

[00:28:11] lower

[00:28:11] in the sky.

[00:28:15] Though the change

[00:28:16] is ever so gradual,

[00:28:19] it becomes clear

[00:28:20] to you

[00:28:21] that with each breath,

[00:28:24] you're clearing

[00:28:25] a space

[00:28:26] upon the beach

[00:28:29] and indeed

[00:28:30] in the sky

[00:28:31] above you.

[00:28:33] As you gently

[00:28:34] nudge the sun

[00:28:36] beyond the horizon,

[00:28:42] there's a space

[00:28:43] for you to breathe,

[00:28:45] to expand,

[00:28:48] to settle

[00:28:49] into yourself.

[00:28:50] and take up

[00:28:52] as much

[00:28:53] room as you like.

[00:28:59] That sense

[00:29:00] of vastness

[00:29:01] you find yourself

[00:29:02] at the very

[00:29:04] center of

[00:29:05] is both

[00:29:06] calming

[00:29:07] and comforting.

[00:29:11] The ocean

[00:29:13] retreats

[00:29:14] and the beach

[00:29:15] stretches out

[00:29:16] from miles

[00:29:17] and miles

[00:29:19] around you.

[00:29:22] For the first time

[00:29:24] in a while,

[00:29:24] you truly

[00:29:27] feel like

[00:29:28] you have

[00:29:28] the space

[00:29:29] to relax

[00:29:30] and rest

[00:29:35] with the world

[00:29:36] expanding

[00:29:37] around you.

[00:29:38] You feel

[00:29:39] your lungs

[00:29:40] opening up

[00:29:41] just a little

[00:29:43] bit more

[00:29:43] with every

[00:29:45] breath

[00:29:45] you take.

[00:29:48] Your breath

[00:29:49] connects you

[00:29:50] to the world

[00:29:51] around you.

[00:29:52] You share

[00:29:55] oxygen

[00:29:56] with every

[00:29:57] living entity

[00:29:58] on earth.

[00:30:00] There is

[00:30:01] nothing

[00:30:01] quite as

[00:30:02] unifying

[00:30:03] as the air

[00:30:05] we breathe.

[00:30:08] Your breath

[00:30:09] gives voice

[00:30:11] to your thoughts.

[00:30:13] It allows you

[00:30:15] to be heard,

[00:30:16] to be seen,

[00:30:18] to be understood.

[00:30:22] lying there,

[00:30:24] your lungs

[00:30:25] expanding

[00:30:26] and creating

[00:30:28] a sense

[00:30:29] of space

[00:30:30] within you.

[00:30:32] Take a moment

[00:30:33] to be grateful

[00:30:35] for your breath,

[00:30:39] for the planet

[00:30:40] that provides

[00:30:41] you with

[00:30:42] enough air

[00:30:43] to breathe,

[00:30:45] and for the body

[00:30:47] that breath

[00:30:48] sustained.

[00:32:54] You use

[00:32:55] your breath

[00:32:56] to begin

[00:32:57] hoisting

[00:32:58] the silver

[00:32:59] moon

[00:32:59] into the sky

[00:33:01] above you.

[00:33:04] Breath,

[00:33:05] you draw

[00:33:06] the day

[00:33:07] to a close

[00:33:08] and snuff

[00:33:10] out the last

[00:33:11] of the evening

[00:33:12] sun

[00:33:12] as though

[00:33:14] one might

[00:33:14] a candle.

[00:33:17] The sand

[00:33:18] beneath you

[00:33:19] begins to

[00:33:20] cool

[00:33:20] as the

[00:33:22] moonlight

[00:33:23] casts

[00:33:24] shadows

[00:33:24] across the

[00:33:26] beach,

[00:33:29] with the

[00:33:30] world around

[00:33:30] you cooling

[00:33:31] off.

[00:33:33] You breathe

[00:33:34] deep,

[00:33:35] drawing in

[00:33:37] the coolness

[00:33:38] and calmness

[00:33:40] that evening

[00:33:41] brings with it.

[00:33:47] You feel

[00:33:48] your thoughts

[00:33:49] begin to

[00:33:50] turn slower

[00:33:51] as night

[00:33:52] descends

[00:33:53] on the beach

[00:33:55] around you.

[00:34:00] Darkness

[00:34:00] smooths itself

[00:34:02] over the sand

[00:34:03] like a balm,

[00:34:05] and just like

[00:34:06] the dark

[00:34:07] of night

[00:34:08] softens

[00:34:09] the edges

[00:34:09] of the world

[00:34:10] around you

[00:34:11] and makes

[00:34:13] the ocean

[00:34:14] ahead of you

[00:34:15] indistinguishable.

[00:34:17] So too

[00:34:19] does it

[00:34:19] soften

[00:34:20] and smooth

[00:34:21] the edges

[00:34:23] of your thoughts,

[00:34:25] soothing

[00:34:26] your soul

[00:34:27] as you

[00:34:28] lie

[00:34:28] relaxing

[00:34:29] in darkness.

[00:34:35] with the

[00:34:36] world

[00:34:37] beyond your

[00:34:38] body

[00:34:38] so

[00:34:39] seemingly

[00:34:40] vast,

[00:34:41] your mind

[00:34:42] feels clearer

[00:34:43] and calmer

[00:34:45] too.

[00:34:47] You know

[00:34:48] now that

[00:34:49] you are

[00:34:50] but an

[00:34:50] extension

[00:34:51] of the

[00:34:52] beautiful

[00:34:52] beach

[00:34:53] you find

[00:34:54] yourself

[00:34:55] lying upon.

[00:34:56] The world

[00:34:59] turns

[00:35:00] to the tune

[00:35:01] of your

[00:35:01] breath.

[00:35:03] So breathe

[00:35:04] deep

[00:35:05] and create

[00:35:07] the space

[00:35:08] you deserve

[00:35:09] for yourself

[00:35:10] in life.

[00:35:12] Watch

[00:35:12] the world

[00:35:13] around you

[00:35:14] retreat.

[00:35:15] The pressures

[00:35:16] and expectations

[00:35:18] of adult life

[00:35:20] recede

[00:35:21] with your

[00:35:22] every

[00:35:23] outendrifts

[00:36:27] ever higher

[00:36:28] in the night

[00:36:29] sky.

[00:36:30] And with

[00:36:31] your breath

[00:36:32] you begin

[00:36:33] to draw

[00:36:34] the stars

[00:36:35] out of

[00:36:35] their slumber.

[00:36:38] You

[00:36:39] are made

[00:36:39] up of

[00:36:40] all of

[00:36:41] the same

[00:36:41] stuff

[00:36:42] as the

[00:36:43] shining

[00:36:43] stars

[00:36:44] above you.

[00:36:47] Know

[00:36:47] that

[00:36:48] even

[00:36:49] when you

[00:36:49] feel alone

[00:36:50] you

[00:36:52] are a

[00:36:52] vital

[00:36:53] part

[00:36:53] of the

[00:36:54] world

[00:36:54] and

[00:36:55] as

[00:36:56] interconnected

[00:36:56] and

[00:36:57] depended

[00:36:58] upon

[00:36:59] by nature

[00:37:00] by the

[00:37:01] moon

[00:37:01] and the

[00:37:02] stars

[00:37:03] the sun

[00:37:05] and the

[00:37:05] seas

[00:37:06] as you

[00:37:08] are

[00:37:08] by the

[00:37:09] people

[00:37:09] in your

[00:37:10] life.

[00:37:11] You have

[00:37:12] a place

[00:37:13] here on

[00:37:14] earth

[00:37:14] and when

[00:37:16] you call

[00:37:16] it to

[00:37:17] when you

[00:37:18] need

[00:37:21] the earth

[00:37:21] will carve

[00:37:23] out a

[00:37:23] space

[00:37:24] for you

[00:37:25] too.

[00:37:25] as the

[00:37:29] stars

[00:37:30] above you

[00:37:31] grow brighter

[00:37:32] and brighter

[00:37:33] still

[00:37:34] you can

[00:37:35] almost feel

[00:37:36] a transfer

[00:37:38] of energy

[00:37:39] occurring.

[00:37:42] With each

[00:37:43] breath

[00:37:43] you realize

[00:37:44] that you're

[00:37:45] feeding the

[00:37:46] stars above

[00:37:47] you

[00:37:48] with the

[00:37:49] last

[00:37:50] lingering

[00:37:51] dregs

[00:37:52] of energy

[00:37:52] in your

[00:37:53] body.

[00:37:54] You're

[00:37:55] fueling

[00:37:56] them.

[00:37:56] them.

[00:37:57] They grow

[00:37:59] brighter and

[00:38:00] brighter

[00:38:01] still

[00:38:01] as you

[00:38:03] sink deeper

[00:38:04] and deeper

[00:38:06] into

[00:38:07] relaxation.

[00:38:09] Your thoughts

[00:38:10] turn slower

[00:38:12] than ever

[00:38:13] before

[00:38:13] and your

[00:38:15] limbs

[00:38:16] feel heavy

[00:38:17] as the

[00:38:19] need for

[00:38:20] sleep

[00:38:20] overcomes

[00:38:22] you.

[00:38:24] A wave

[00:38:25] of exhaustion

[00:38:27] washes

[00:38:28] through

[00:38:28] your body

[00:38:29] as you

[00:38:31] lie

[00:38:31] relaxing

[00:38:32] beneath

[00:38:33] the stars

[00:38:34] and as

[00:38:36] you drift

[00:38:37] off

[00:38:37] into a

[00:38:39] deep

[00:38:39] restful

[00:38:41] sleep

[00:38:42] you can't

[00:38:44] help but

[00:38:45] think

[00:38:45] that having

[00:38:47] done

[00:38:47] nothing

[00:38:48] all day

[00:38:49] has been

[00:38:50] really

[00:38:51] quite

[00:38:51] tiring.
