When it feels like everyone else is moving ahead, comparison can get especially loud at night. In this mini meditation, Karissa helps you step away from other people’s timelines and reconnect with the idea that your life is allowed to unfold at its own pace.

[00:00:25] Hi, Karissa here and welcome back to Sleep Wave. This is a mini meditation, just a few quiet minutes to help you quiet the comparison in your mind. You can listen to this on its own, or if you're in bed, let it gently lead you into one of my longer sleep meditations afterwards.
[00:00:46] There's a particular kind of comparison that only seems to show up at night, when there's nothing left to distract you from measuring your life against everyone else's.
[00:01:06] Maybe tonight it's a friend's promotion, a photo of someone's wedding, a milestone that feels like it's arriving for everyone except you.
[00:01:19] Right on schedule, while you're still figuring things out. It's human to compare yourself this way, and it almost always feels louder at night, when your mind has nothing else to measure itself against.
[00:01:38] I want to offer you something simple tonight. There is no schedule. Nobody is actually ahead or behind. That's just a story we tell, using other people's timelines as the ruler. The truth is closer to this.
[00:02:04] Every path runs on its own clock, and yours is allowed to look nothing like anyone else's. So, if you're ready to let go of that worry, bring your attention to your breath.
[00:02:25] Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4. Slowly through your mouth for a count of 6. Breathe in the calm, and breathe out the comparison.
[00:02:52] Let your breath settle into something slower. There's no race happening in this exact moment. Only rest.
[00:03:08] Now, bring your attention to your body. Your shoulders carrying the weights of behind. Let them drop. Your jaw unclenching. Your chest softening. There is nothing to worry about tonight.
[00:03:39] Now imagine a garden full of many different plants in spring. Some in the height of summer. Some take years before they ever flower, quietly building roots the whole time out of sight.
[00:04:07] None of them are behind. None of them are behind. Each one is simply doing what it does in its own time.
[00:04:20] You are not late. You're not behind on some invisible schedule. You're exactly where your own life is. Growing at your own pace. In your own season.
[00:04:39] You are not behind on some of your life. You're not behind. You're not behind something else. You're not behind at your own pace. You're not behind on some animal. I'm exactly where I am. I can grow at my own pace.
[00:05:05] Notice how you feel now. A little lighter, perhaps? A little less in competition with everyone else's clock. Come back to your breath for 4 and out for 6.
[00:05:35] Breathe in and a slow extended exhale. Your own pace.
[00:06:14] Take one last slow inhale and long. Everyone blooms in their own time. Tonight, all you need to do is simply rest.
[00:06:44] If you'd like to continue our practice, you're welcome to play one of my full-length sleep meditations that'll guide you into sleep. Whichever you choose, sleep well tonight.
[00:07:16] Tonight's episode is brought to you by Vinted. I recently reorganized my closet for fall and realized I tend to wear the same handful of things over and over again, while half my clothes just sit there waiting for their moment. And every so often, I'll pull something out and think, when was the last time I actually wore this? And if I can't remember, that's probably telling me something. That's where Vinted can be really useful.
[00:07:42] Vinted is a secondhand marketplace app where you can sell clothes you're no longer wearing and make a little extra money from them. And listing on Vinted is really simple. It's quick to get something listed, and when it sells, Vinted creates the prepaid shipping label for you. The Vinted app is also free to download, and there are no seller fees, so you keep everything you earn. So if there are a few things in your closet you keep passing over, maybe it's time to stop saving them for someday.
[00:08:11] Ready to clean out your closet and make some extra money? Download the Vinted app for free and start listing. With no seller fees, you keep every dollar you earn. I'm Shilpa Oskakovic. And I'm Jazzy Sefcek. And we're the hosts of the Bon Appetit Bake Club podcast. Bake Club is Bon Appetit's community of confident, curious bakers. Jazzy and I love to bake. Some might even call us obsessive. And we love to talk about all the hows and whys and what didn't works that come with it.
[00:08:39] Every month, we publish a recipe on BonAppetit.com that introduces a baking concept we think you should know. Then you'll bake, send us any questions you have, and we'll get together here on the podcast to talk about the recipe. So consider this your official invitation. Come join the BA Bake Club. New episodes on the first Tuesday of every month, wherever you get your podcasts. Happy baking. There's something quietly remarkable about the stories people carry with them.
[00:09:07] The moments that changed everything. The situations nobody could have planned for. What Was That Like? is a podcast built entirely around those moments. Each episode, a guest sits down and recounts a real experience. An unusual job. An unexpected encounter. A life turned briefly sideways. True stories told by the people who lived them, verified so even the most extraordinary ones you can trust.
[00:09:36] Episodes like Elena was friends with Mickey and Scott was an undercover FBI agent give you a gentle window into lives lived very differently from your own. So if you find yourself drawn to real human stories, the kind that make you wonder what you would have done, I'd invite you to spend some time with What Was That Like? Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening right now. What was that like?
