[00:00:27] We all have thoughts or feelings arise from time to time that we wish we could skip. It can be uncomfortable or even feel invasive when these arise. So what are we to do? A very common response can be to numb out unwanted thoughts or feelings with whatever has worked in the past. While this can work in the moment to distract us, those same thoughts or feelings will likely pop right back up when whatever we've done to distract ourselves is going to be a little bit.

[00:00:57] A pretty powerful side effect of meditation, though, is that we can learn to sit with, observe, and move through these thoughts and feelings. I'm not saying that this is always easy, preferable, or even wholly possible in all cases. Still, meditation before sleep can help us tiptoe toward having the ability and even desire to sit with our thoughts and feelings.

[00:01:25] They become less scary and overwhelming and more familiar. I like to compare them to that monster under the bed that we may have been scared of in childhood. Once you look your particular monster in the eye, they become less of a thing to fear and it's more of an, oh, hi, it's you again. I see that you're here and you can go anytime. In fact, I encourage having this exact conversation with your own personal monster, be it fear or fear.

[00:01:55] Fear, anxiety, stress, whirling thoughts. Having a conversation with them makes them other than you. They are simply a visitor passing through. When we don't identify so strongly with particular thoughts or feelings, it naturally creates space for them to both exist and leave. Have you ever heard the phrase, what you resist persists, what you look at disappears? That beautifully describes this phenomenon.

[00:02:25] Another tool I enjoy using when I'm having those less than pleasant thoughts and feelings arise is to allow them to physically move through me. I do this in a couple ways. One, I move in a big way, be it on a walk or a workout or doing some stretching or yoga. Or two, I move in a small way. For me, this means allowing my body to move while I sit in meditation. Maybe I roll my neck or stretch my back or shake out my hands.

[00:02:54] Sometimes I add a deep breath or a sound with it. An audible sigh, a chant or mantra. Om is always nice. Or hey, even a quiet scream because sometimes life just calls for that.

[00:03:36] But now, a quick word from our sponsors who make this free content possible. Hey, it's Carissa, and if you listen to Sleepwave, you know I'm all about creating a nightly ritual that actually helps your body wind down. But sometimes, even with a great routine, your body just won't cooperate, especially during perimenopause or menopause when hormone changes throw everything out of sync. That's where Happy Mammoth's Deep Sleep Mode comes in.

[00:04:01] It's a plant-based sleep support formula designed specifically for women, with ingredients like passionflower, magnesium glycinate, and L-tryptophan, all chosen to help you feel calm, grounded, and finally ready for sleep. What I love is that it doesn't knock you out. It helps your body get back into rhythm naturally. So you can fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up without that groggy, what day is it feeling? Thousands of women are using it as part of their wind-down routine and saying, this actually works.

[00:04:30] So if sleep has become a nightly struggle, this might be your answer. Head to happymammoth.com and use code SLEEPWAVE at checkout to get 15% off your first order. That's happymammoth.com, code SLEEPWAVE.
