[00:00:10] Good evening, Sleep Wave. It's your host and friend for all things sleep, Carissa, and I'm so happy you're here tonight. This is our weekly free episode. If you've been enjoying the show, join our Sleep Wave family and become a subscriber. All the details are below in the show notes. You made it through the day. Good job. All you need to do now is put down everything you've been carrying and let your body rest.

[00:00:38] You know those nights when sleep feels just out of reach? When you're lying there and the mind won't stop turning things over, replaying the day, rehearsing tomorrow? On those nights, the mind treats sleep like a problem to solve, and the harder it tries, the more awake it becomes. So tonight, we're not going to try.

[00:01:01] Tonight, we have a hypnotic body scan to guide us, and we're going to work with something your body already knows how to do. Something it has been doing every moment of this day without any help from you at all. We are going to surrender to gravity. Feel the weight of your body. Let the breath slow everything down. And let gravity do the rest.

[00:01:27] Before we begin, our only ad break, which helps make this show possible. To listen ad-free, follow the link in the show notes. There's something quietly remarkable about the stories people carry with them. The moments that changed everything. The situations nobody could have planned for. What was that like is a podcast built entirely around those moments. Each episode, a guest sits down and recounts a real experience.

[00:01:55] An unusual job, an unexpected encounter, a life turned briefly sideways. True stories told by the people who lived them, verified so even the most extraordinary ones you can trust. Episodes like, Elena was friends with Mickey, and Scott was an undercover FBI agent, give you a gentle window into lives lived very differently from your own.

[00:02:21] So if you find yourself drawn to real human stories, the kind that make you wonder what you would have done, I'd invite you to spend some time with What Was That Like? Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening right now. So get comfy, let a big breath out through your mouth, and let everything else go. All you need to do is listen to my voice.

[00:03:00] Find whatever position feels right for you tonight. On your back, on your side, whatever your body needs. Now, feel the weight of yourself where you rest. This may be the first time you've checked in with yourself all day.

[00:03:21] You may realize that weight now, the heaviness you've been carrying all day, through every conversation, every task. You don't have to carry it anymore. The bed beneath you is carrying it now. The floor beneath the bed is carrying it. The earth is carrying it.

[00:03:46] Gravity is doing what it has always done, holding you without being asked, supporting you without any conditions, asking nothing from you in return. Let your body spread out and widen against your bed. Relaxing and letting go of any tension.

[00:04:13] Let the parts of you that have been bracing all day begin, slowly, to release downward. Let the breath move in and out, without needing to be perfect. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.

[00:04:42] With each exhale, feel your body grow a little heavier, a little more settled, a little more relaxed. Notice how your body accepts this without being convinced. It has been ready all day to set itself down and be still.

[00:05:09] The weight you feel right now is your body letting go into gravity and letting the pull do its work. We're going to do three slow breaths together now. This technique is called 4-7-8 breathing. And it's designed to activate your body's natural relaxation response in about 30 seconds.

[00:05:38] The long exhale is the important part. It signals to your nervous system that it's safe to slow down. So just follow my count and notice how different you feel on the other side. Breathe in through the nose. 2, 3, 4. Hold.

[00:06:02] 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. And breathe out slowly through the mouth. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Again. Breathe in. 2, 3, 4. Hold.

[00:06:29] 2, 3, 4, 7. And out. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. One more time. Breathe in. 2, 3, 4. Hold.

[00:06:55] 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. 5, 6, 7, 8. Good. That's your nervous system slowing down. From here, just let the breath do whatever it wants.

[00:07:23] You don't need to control it or pay too much attention.

[00:08:31] As you lie here, gravity has your body completely. Gently pulling it down deeper into rest. Your face is growing heavier. Your jaw softens. Your eyelids settle with a pleasant weight that you have no interest in fighting.

[00:09:02] Your neck releases the long work of holding your head upright all day. Your head feeling heavy against the pillow in a way that feels like relief. You don't need to make any of this happen. It's already happening. It's already happening. Just let your awareness rest on it. Lightly.

[00:09:31] The way you might watch something from a distance.

[00:10:38] Your shoulders are dropping now. A little further than you might have expected. Your arms are heavy at your sides. Your hands uncurling. Your fingers slightly open. Nothing left to hold. Your chest rises and falls on its own. Without instruction. Without effort.

[00:11:08] With each breath, feel your chest grow a little heavier too. Rising and falling. With less and less effort each time. Your belly softens and releases any tension. Your hips grow still and wide against the bed.

[00:11:36] Your legs are heavy now. Your feet relaxed. Nowhere left to go tonight.

[00:12:48] Your whole body is being held by the surface beneath you. And the quiet, constant pull of the earth below that. This is not something you have to maintain. It is simply what happens when you relax into it.

[00:13:19] Gravity has always been here. Holding everything. Holding you. All that changed is that you let yourself be held. If thoughts come, let them. You don't need to push them away. Or follow them anywhere.

[00:13:50] Thoughts. Your body is heavy. Just come back to the weights. The pull. The quiet, downward draw.

[00:14:07] And let that sleep.

[00:15:14] Let that word land somewhere in your body. You don't need to find where. Just let it settle. Every time you hear that word, you go a little further down. Not by trying. But simply by allowing gravity to keep doing what it does best.

[00:15:46] Your body already knows how to sink deeper. Your mind is simply learning to stop getting in the way.

[00:17:28] We are going to use a simple visualization now to guide you even deeper. If you've never done this kind of thing before, don't worry. All you need to do is listen. Just let the words wash over you and see where they take you.

[00:17:56] Imagine that there is a staircase ahead of you. Ten steps leading downward into a deeper, heavier, more complete rest. With each step, your body grows more settled. More heavy. More.

[00:18:28] Just follow my voice. One step and let yourself go deeper into rest. Feel the ground beneath your feet, solid and warm, taking your weight without effort.

[00:18:57] There is nothing to do here except begin to descend. Nine. The first step down. Your shoulders drop a little further. A breath releases that you didn't know you were holding. Your body grows a little more relaxed.

[00:19:28] Feeling heavier now. Your face is soft. Your jaw is loose. Your eyelids are heavy in a way that feels good. Seven. With every step, the heaviness increases. Not heavy like exhaustion.

[00:19:59] Heavy like setting something down you had forgotten you were carrying. The kind of heavy that feels like really six. Your conscious mind grows quieter here. Less interested in what comes next.

[00:20:26] Less interested in keeping track. Death moves on its own now. And you are simply going along with the descent. Feel your belly soften and release. Let it relax. Let it be at rest.

[00:20:56] In. Feel it rise. Sinking further with each breath. Your hips. Your pelvis. The deep weight of your lower body releases downward.

[00:21:27] Your thighs are growing heavy. Your legs feel still. Every part of you is held by the surface beneath you. And the pull of the earth. Sleep is arriving now. The bottom of the staircase is close.

[00:21:58] This destination is not something to be achieved like a goal. It's just there. Patiently waiting for you to arrive. Two. Almost there. Nothing to do. Nothing to solve or understand. Just the pull.

[00:22:27] And the breath. And the quiet. Just the pleasant heaviness of a body that has finally agreed to slow down. One. Feel the shift as you arrive. A soft landing.

[00:22:56] A settling. The ground rises gently. To meet. You are here. Your body is fully supported. Your subconscious is open and receptive. Absorbing what it needs

[00:23:24] without any effort.

[00:24:31] There is nothing more to do now. Nowhere further to go. just this. The quiet. The weight. The breath moving in on its own. Let yourself rest here for a moment

[00:25:02] and simply feel how it is to have arrived.

[00:25:08] To have arrived

[00:26:12] at deep relaxation. Your whole body is feeling heavy, still, and completely supported. Feel your whole body breathing. Feel your whole

[00:26:42] body relaxing. Feel your whole body sinking a little more with each exhale. Each breath carrying you further into rest. There is nowhere to be except exactly

[00:27:11] where you are. There is nothing to do except exactly what you are doing. Which is nothing at all.

[00:28:26] You may see now that sleep doesn't come because you reach for it. It comes when you allow it. Layer. The weight increases and the resistance fades

[00:28:52] until your body simply descends into stillness into dream into the deep slow rhythm that restores you through the night replenishing what the day used returning you

[00:29:21] to yourself. Sleep is not something you achieve. it is something you let happen and now the time has come.

[00:29:51] Breathe in

[00:31:10] let these words settle into you the way your weight settled into the bed slowly completely without resistance no effort needed. all you need to do is follow my voice

[00:31:33] am ready for sleep I release the effort of the day I sink deeper with every breath sleep

[00:32:02] comes easily to me my body knows how to rest I am safe am supported I am worthy of deep uninterrupted

[00:32:34] I sleep soundly and wake renewed my mind grows quiet my body grows heavy I drift I allow myself to sink into deep restorative restorative sleep release

[00:33:10] the weight of it

[00:33:39] with rest for sleep it's the effort of the day I sink deeper with every breath sleep comes easily to me

[00:34:08] my body knows how to rest am supported

[00:34:40] and wake renew grows quiet my body grows heavy to sink into deep restorative sleep

[00:35:14] the day release the weight of it I let it go drifting to sleep
